It is common for patients who have had breast reconstruction surgery to require more than just a single procedure. The 1998 Federal Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act stipulates that any insurance plan providing coverage for mastectomy surgery must also provide coverage for breast reconstruction. In addition, it must also cover the alternate breast to ensure adequate symmetry. The Act also ensures coverage for revision of a previously reconstructed breast and for nipple reconstruction procedures.

What is Breast Revision?
By definition, a breast revision procedure may involve correcting complications or deformities from previous surgeries like reconstructive breast surgery after mastectomy or correcting the disfigurement of the breast after lumpectomy and radiation. It also can include revisions of the breast following a breast reduction or elective, cosmetic procedures such as breast lifts and augmentations.
Reasons for Seeking Breast Revision Surgery
Patients may seek breast revision surgery for a variety of reasons. Those who have had previous breast surgery, such as reconstruction following mastectomy or lumpectomy and radiation, may be looking to correct any deformities or complications arising from their previous procedure. Additionally, those who have previously received silicone implants or other types of implants may wish to revise their breasts due to medical conditions or natural aging that has occurred since the initial procedure. Finally, those who have undergone elective cosmetic procedures like breast lifts and augmentations may desire a revision due to dissatisfaction with the results of their original surgery.
Different Types of Breast Revision Surgery
In order of frequency, the most common reconstructive procedures that require revision are:
- Revision after breast reconstruction following mastectomy
- Revision after Lumpectomy and Radiation
- Revision after Breast Reduction Surgery
- Revision after Primary Breast Augmentation Surgery (Breast Augmentation Revision or Breast Implant removal)
- Revision after other breast-related cosmetic procedures (such as Breast Lift Surgery).
The most common physical findings that are treated with revision surgery after mastectomy are:
- Breast Asymmetry (one breast larger than the other)
- Implant issues, including: deflation, displacement, scarring and or rippling on the edge of the implant.
- Loss of proper definition and position of the folds beneath the breast
- Firmness, nodules, or indentations because of scarring or tissue damage by radiation.
- Malposition or absence of the nipple-areolar complex
The scope of this article will focus on revisions following mastectomy and lumpectomy post-radiation.

Breast Reconstruction Revision after Mastectomy
As a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast revision surgery, I have helped many breast cancer patients achieve natural-looking breasts after a mastectomy. By performing secondary breast reconstruction surgery, I have helped my patients benefit from improved comfort and confidence in their physical appearance. Typically, the procedure involves fat grafting to reconstruct the breasts and restore symmetry as well as a breast lift surgery if necessary.
To ensure successful results, I plan out each patient’s individualized treatment plan while considering any unique challenges that may arise due to previous treatments such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or scarring from prior surgeries. After I reconstruct the breasts with fat grafting, I also use techniques such as tissue expansion and flap reconstruction to provide additional volume and shape for the breasts.
The benefits of undergoing revision breast surgery outweigh any potential risks associated with the procedure. My patients receive improved satisfaction with their post-mastectomy breast appearance and better symmetry between both sides of their body, which can help them feel more confident in their own skin again. In addition, this type of reconstruction allows for more natural movement, which is especially important for those who are still undergoing cancer treatment or who have had breast cancer in the past.
For any patient considering a revision following mastectomy, I recommend seeking out a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast revision surgery and who has extensive experience with this type of procedure. Having a comprehensive consultation will help you understand your options, the expected results, and any potential risks associated with the procedure.
Breast Revision and Reconstruction after Lumpectomy and Radiation
Revision breast surgery following a lumpectomy or radiation can be a difficult and challenging procedure. As an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon in Eau Claire, WI, I have dedicated my practice to providing the best possible results for breast reconstruction after mastectomy and other types of cancer treatment.
The key to successful reconstruction after lumpectomy and radiation is to ensure that the patient’s natural breast tissue is preserved as much as possible and that any scarring or tissue damage from radiation therapy is minimized. During an initial consultation, I meet with each patient to discuss their goals and evaluate their individual situation to determine the best course of action for their particular case.
After lumpectomy and radiation, the most common physical findings are:
- Breast asymmetry (because of the tissue removed to cure the cancer)
- Distortion of breast shape near the surgical site (dent, bulge)
- Displacement of the nipple areola on the affected breast
- Firm or indurated soft tissue and skin following radiation damage
When performing revision breast surgery, I use techniques such as fat grafting, flap reconstruction, and tissue expansion to restore volume and shape to the breasts while minimizing any scarring or tissue damage caused by previous treatments. This method helps create a more natural look while also providing additional coverage over areas of scarring or skin laxity that may have been caused by radiation therapy. Additionally, I often recommend nipple areola tattooing as part of my surgical plan to provide additional definition and realism to the breasts.
My primary goal is to help my patients achieve their desired results and a sense of restored confidence in their bodies. If you would like to learn more about breast revision surgery in Eau Claire, WI, please contact my office to schedule a consultation.
The Breast Implant Removal
Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure that is usually performed to remove breast implants that have either ruptured or are causing complications such as capsular contracture. During this procedure, the surgeon will make incisions in the breast skin and then carefully remove the implants, including any scar tissue or other debris from around them. The surgeon may also need to adjust the size of the patient’s natural breast or previous breast surgery to ensure a better result. Depending on the type of implants used and their condition at the time of removal, additional procedures may be necessary during recovery such as repositioning the breast implant capsule, replacing existing implants with new ones, or adjusting the size of the remaining natural breast tissue.
One common complication associated with breast implant removal is capsular contracture. This occurs when scar tissue forms around an implant, hardens, and causes pain and discomfort in the area. It can lead to changes in the shape and feel of one or both breasts as well as potential health risks if not treated properly. To help reduce your risk for capsular contracture following implant removal surgery, it’s important to follow your surgeon’s instructions for post-operative care, which may include wearing a supportive bra and avoiding strenuous activity. Additionally, regular breast self-exams and follow-up visits with your surgeon are important to monitor the condition of your implants and the health of the surrounding tissue.
Breast Revision Cost in Wisconsin
The average cost of breast implants in Wisconsin ranges between $7,000-$10,000 depending on where you live. The cost of breast implant surgery varies based on factors including surgeon experience, location, and insurance coverage.
However, if you’re combining breast implants with some other cosmetic procedure (such as cosmetic surgery breast augmentation), the cost of breast augmentation may be significantly higher.
Deciding to Undergo a Breast Revision
Revision of a reconstructed breast or a breast that has undergone lumpectomy and radiation can be challenging because of the presence of more scarring from previous surgery and the tissue damage caused by radiation treatment. During this type of surgery, the surgeon may remove scar tissue and address capsular contracture to minimize any discomfort or complications associated with recovering from breast surgery. The surgeon may also address breast swelling through different techniques such as fat grafting or tissue expansion. Patients will be closely monitored for recovery progress to ensure that the best possible results are achieved with minimal risk of complications.
